In response to an article in today's Daily
Telegraph, "Only
Scottish independence can solve the 'English Question'" by Alex
Salmond, leader of the Scottish National
Party.
The power structures of the nation state, like those of
free-market capitalism (being intimately linked with
each other), are deeply rooted in (European) man's
animal nature and behaviour (unsurprisingly, in view of
human origins) and thus inherently unsustainable.
It was the ruling classes' animal drive for POWER (the
most versatile form of which is MONEY, of course) that
first unified England under a single crown and went on
to create the world's largest empire. But empires are
unstable and quickly disintegrate. London's empire is
still disintegrating, and will continue to do so, until
eventually we create sustainable power structures
(social and economic) that are rooted, not in our animal
nature, as they are now, but in our more enlightened,
human nature.
