Dear
Sir/Madam,
I am vexed at
reading about
how the BBC is
editing
re-releases of
the Goon Show
in case they
should offend.
For my part,
if censored
versions is
all that is
being offered,
I shall not
bother with
them (Political
correctness
gives Goons
the snip).
One wonders
what will
happen (and I
say this in a
whisper) when
the BBC
realises just
how "hideously
white" most of
Britain's 2000
year-old
history (not
to mention its
prehistory)
is. Century
after century
with not a
black or brown
face to be
seen: how
embarrassing!
Shame on us
for not being
more inclusive
and sensitive
to our ethnic
minorities! An
official
apology by the
Archbishop of
Canterbury is
surely called
for, although scarcely
enough. What
about
pretending
that the Black
Prince was
really black,
or shading in
a few of the
characters on
the Bayeux
Tapestry?
On the other
hand - given
the insane
lengths to
which their
political
correctness
has already
gone - perhaps
it's better
not to put
ideas into BBC
heads.
I wish they'd
give us
natives a TV
and radio
channel of our
own (after
all, we did
invent the
bloody
things!),
where we could
relax and be
ourselves and
not have to
worry about
being
inclusive or
offending
someone, and
not have to
endure their
quotas of
ethnics in
front of the
camera.
Only now, long
after the
Empire has
gone, is the
true meaning
of "the white
man's burden"
becoming
apparent. No
wonder so many
people have
fled the
country or are
on
antidepressants,
and you hear
so many old
people say
they're glad
that they will
soon be out of
it.
